How college GPA works
| Course | Grade | Credits | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biology | A (4.0) | 4 | 16.0 |
| Calculus | B (3.0) | 3 | 9.0 |
| English | A− (3.7) | 3 | 11.1 |
| Total | 10 | 36.1 → 3.61 GPA |
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours = 36.1 ÷ 10 = 3.61.
Frequently asked questions
How is college GPA calculated?
College GPA is credit-weighted. Multiply each course’s grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, …) by its credit hours to get quality points, add up all quality points, then divide by total credit hours. A heavier 4-credit course counts more than a 1-credit one.
What is cumulative GPA vs semester GPA?
Semester GPA uses only that term’s courses. Cumulative GPA uses every course across all terms — total quality points divided by total credit hours. Add all your semesters in the calculator to see both.
Do colleges use a 4.0 or 4.3 scale?
Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale where A and A+ are both 4.0. Some use 4.3 where A+ is 4.3. Check your registrar; the calculator uses the common 4.0 scale with minus grades (A− = 3.7).
