$129,717–$186,050: $9,028 plus 17c per dollar over $129,717.
Above $186,050: capped at a flat 10% of total repayment income.
Thresholds are indexed each year, so next year's figures will differ. This estimate covers HECS-HELP compulsory repayment only — it does not calculate income tax itself, Medicare levy, or other loan types (VET Student Loans, trade support loans) which follow the same repayment thresholds but are separate debts.

Where these figures come from
Every rate and threshold here is copied by hand from the official page below and re-checked on a set date — we do not scrape them automatically, so a figure never changes without a person confirming it first.
Repayment income includes reportable fringe benefits, super contributions and net investment losses — enter your repayment income directly rather than taxable income.
This calculator is math, not tax or financial advice. Where an official figure and our copy of it disagree, the official one is correct — tell us and we will fix it.
Not financial or tax advice. Figures are mathematical illustrations only. Real products add fees, taxes, and terms that change the result — confirm with your bank, CA, or official notice. Numbers are not uploaded to our servers for processing.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official ATO calculator?
No. It applies the published 2026-27 HECS-HELP marginal thresholds and rates only. Your actual compulsory repayment is assessed by the ATO from your tax return — use myGov or a tax agent to confirm.
What are the 2026-27 HECS-HELP thresholds?
No repayment below $69,528. Then 15c per dollar over $69,528 up to $129,717. Then $9,028 plus 17c per dollar over $129,717 up to $186,050. Above $186,050, the repayment is capped at a flat 10% of total repayment income rather than continuing to climb marginally.
What is "repayment income"?
Repayment income is broader than take-home pay — it includes taxable income plus items like reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions, and net investment losses. Enter your repayment income figure directly; this tool does not add those items for you.
Why did HECS change to a marginal system?
Until the 2023 reform, HECS repayments were a flat percentage of your entire income once you crossed a threshold, which could push people into disproportionate repayments right at the cutoff. The marginal system now only charges the higher rate on income above each threshold, similar to how income tax brackets work.
Is my income uploaded anywhere?
No. TryCalculatingNow computes the repayment in your browser. The shareable link carries only the income figure you entered — never uploaded to our servers for processing.
