Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
The most common rule (CBSE and many universities) is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, 8.0 CGPA = 76% and 9.2 CGPA = 87.4%. Some universities use their own formula — VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, GTU uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. Always use the formula printed by your board or university.
Why multiply CGPA by 9.5?
CBSE derived 9.5 by averaging the marks of top scorers across subjects over several years; the midpoint of each grade band worked out to about 9.5 times the grade point. It is an approximation for a single overall percentage, not an exact per-subject mark.
What is 8.0 CGPA in percentage?
8.0 CGPA is 76% using the CBSE formula (8.0 × 9.5 = 76). A 9.0 CGPA is 85.5% and a 7.5 CGPA is 71.25%.

Should I trust this page or my university?
Your university or board wins. The 9.5 rule is a widely used default, but many institutions publish their own conversion formula or percentage directly on the grade sheet. Use this page to estimate, then confirm with the official rule.
