Rent Receipts for HRA: What to Include
Published July 19, 2026By Samson PG
Employers ask for monthly rent receipts when you claim HRA. Here is a practical checklist — and a browser-only way to print them.
A rent receipt records that a tenant paid rent to a landlord for a stated period. In India, many salaried employees need monthly receipts (and sometimes a rent agreement) to support House Rent Allowance (HRA) claims with payroll.
This is a practical checklist — not tax or legal advice. Thresholds, PAN rules, and employer policies change; confirm with your CA or HR.
What a useful receipt usually shows
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Landlord name (+ signature space) | Who received the money |
| Tenant name | Who paid |
| Property address | Which unit the rent covers |
| Amount + period | Month/from–to dates |
| Payment date + mode | Cash / UPI / bank / cheque |
| Receipt number | Simple sequence for your file |
| Landlord PAN (when required) | Some employers ask above set rent levels |

FAQ
Is a printed PDF enough?
Often yes for employer files. Some companies want wet-ink signatures or a landlord letter — ask payroll.
Do I need a rent agreement too?
Many HRA processes want both agreement and receipts. The generator only covers the receipt.
Can I edit last month’s draft?
Yes — save draft locally in the tool (browser storage), or clear and start fresh.
