Canada Federal Tax 2026: What You Actually Pay
Published July 24, 2026By Samson PG
Federal tax is only half the picture in Canada. Here's how the 2026 federal brackets and Basic Personal Amount work, and why provincial tax is a separate line.
Canada taxes income at both the federal level and the provincial or territorial level. Every province sets its own brackets, so a single “Canada tax” number can’t be exactly right for everyone — the federal portion, though, is the same no matter where you live, and that’s what this tool and post cover.
TryCalculatingNow’s calculator is math only — not tax advice, not a filing, and federal only (no provincial tax).
2026 federal tax brackets
| Rate | Taxable income over |
|---|---|
| 14% | $0 |
| 20.5% | $58,523 |
| 26% | $117,045 |
| 29% | $181,440 |
| 33% | $258,482 |
The Canada Revenue Agency indexes these thresholds each year — 2026’s are about 2% higher than 2025’s.
The Basic Personal Amount (BPA) is a credit, not a deduction
Unlike the US standard deduction, Canada’s BPA doesn’t reduce your taxable income — it’s a non-refundable credit applied at the lowest bracket rate (14% for 2026) directly against your tax bill.
For 2026:
- Full BPA of $16,452 applies at net income up to $181,440.
- Above that, the BPA phases down linearly until it bottoms out at $14,829 at $258,482 and above — a mechanism that targets higher earners, not typical incomes.
Why provincial tax isn’t included
Every province and territory levies its own income tax on top of the federal amount, with its own brackets — Ontario’s aren’t Alberta’s, and Quebec’s system is different again. Showing one blended “Canada” number would either be wrong for most readers or require arbitrarily picking a single province as a stand-in. The federal figure alone is the one number that’s accurate everywhere in the country; add your province’s own bracket table for the full picture.

FAQ
What are the 2026 Canada federal tax brackets?
14% up to $58,523, 20.5% up to $117,045, 26% up to $181,440, 29% up to $258,482, and 33% above that.
Is the Basic Personal Amount the same as a tax-free threshold?
Roughly, for most incomes — since the BPA credit at 14% effectively cancels out federal tax on the first portion of income. It’s calculated as a credit, though, not a straight income exclusion.
Why doesn’t this include my province’s tax?
Provincial and territorial tax varies by jurisdiction and is calculated separately from federal tax. This tool shows the federal portion only, which is consistent no matter which province you’re in.
Does the BPA amount change based on income?
Yes — it phases down for net income between $181,440 and $258,482 in 2026, from $16,452 down to $14,829, then stays at $14,829 above that.
