Marks percentage answers: of the maximum available, what share did you score? For a board total of 600, percentage is still the same one-liner used for any denominator.
The formula
percentage = (marks scored ÷ maximum marks) × 100Example: 456 / 600 → (456 ÷ 600) × 100 = **76%**.

Out of 500: 400 → 80%. Out of 100: the score is the percentage.
Multiple papers
If papers have different maxima, either:
- Sum first: total scored ÷ total maximum, or
- Weight explicitly if the board publishes paper weights that are not equal to raw marks.
Do not average paper percentages when maxima differ — that distorts the result the same way unweighted SGPA averaging does.
Percent vs grade cutoffs

Is 76% the same as first class?
Labels like “first class” / “distinction” are institution-specific. The percentage is just the math.
What if I have grace marks?
Use the final awarded total your board prints, including grace if it is already in the scored column.
Can percentage exceed 100%?
Only if scored > maximum (bonus schemes). Otherwise check for a data entry error.
