Exam Marks to Percent & Percentage Math

45 out of 60 is 75%. That one conversion shows up every semester — you do not need to paste grades into a random cloud calculator.
A percentage answers “how much out of a whole?” Students use it for exam marks. Everyone else uses it for discounts, tips, and “how much did this grow?”
Marks scored → percentage
Formula:
percent = (marks scored ÷ total marks) × 100
Example: 45 out of 60 → (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 75%.
That is the “X is what % of Y?” mode on a percentage calculator. It is not the same as a weighted final-grade question (“what do I need on the exam?”) — use a final grade calculator when the final still sits ahead of you with its own weight.
What is X% of Y?
result = value × (percent ÷ 100)
Example: 15% of 80 = 12. Useful for category weights, discounts, and practice problems.
Percent change
change % = ((new − old) ÷ old) × 100
From 50 to 65 is a 30% increase. Always divide by the starting value. If the start is zero, percent change is undefined.
Increase or decrease by a percent
new = value × (1 ± percent ÷ 100)
Example: 200 increased by 10% → 220.
Common totals, converted
Most exam papers land on a handful of totals, so these cover the majority of “what percent is X out of Y” searches:

The pattern worth internalising: the same raw mark means completely different things depending on the total, which is why comparing marks across subjects without converting is meaningless.
When subjects have different maximum marks
Averaging percentages only works if every subject carries equal weight. If one paper is out of 100 and another out of 50, averaging their percentages silently treats them as equally important. Add the marks and the totals instead:
overall % = (sum of all marks scored ÷ sum of all maximum marks) × 100
For 80/100 and 45/50, that is 125 ÷ 150 = 83.3% — not the 84.5% you would get by averaging 80% and 90%. The gap widens as the papers become more unequal in size.
Marks with credits or weights
Some boards weight subjects by credit hours rather than by maximum marks. Then each subject’s percentage is multiplied by its credit, summed, and divided by total credits:
weighted % = Σ(percent × credit) ÷ Σ(credit)
Ignoring credits is the most common spreadsheet error in this whole area — it quietly treats a 1-credit elective as equal to a 4-credit core paper.
Rounding, and why your result may differ from the transcript
Institutions differ on rounding: some truncate, some round to the nearest whole number, some keep two decimals, and some round only at the final step rather than per subject. 66.66% can legitimately appear as 66%, 66.7%, or 67% on different documents. When a percentage decides eligibility for something, the institution’s own published rule is the one that counts — not a calculator’s default.
