Quick answer
To finish at 50% overall: needed = (50 − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. Example starter: current 82%, final worth 30% — open the calculator with desired=50 already set.

What you need, by current grade and final weight
Read down to your current average, across to how much the final is worth. Each cell is the score you need on the final to finish on 50% overall. Over 100 means it is not reachable from that position without extra credit; ≤ 0 means you have already secured it.
| Current grade | Final = 20% | Final = 30% | Final = 40% | Final = 50% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60% | 10% | 26.7% | 35% | 40% |
| 70% | already there | 3.3% | 20% | 30% |
| 75% | already there | already there | 12.5% | 25% |
| 80% | already there | already there | 5% | 20% |
| 85% | already there | already there | already there | 15% |
| 90% | already there | already there | already there | 10% |
Why the weight matters more than it looks
The lighter the final, the less it can move your average — in both directions. A final worth 20% can only shift your overall grade by a fifth of the gap, so a large deficit becomes arithmetically impossible to close even with a perfect paper. A heavier final gives more room to climb, and equally more room to fall. That is why the same 50% target can look comfortable in one column and unreachable in another on the same row.
Two things to check against your syllabus before trusting any of this: whether your "current grade" already includes zeros for unsubmitted work (which understates it), and whether the final replaces a lower test score or any grade is dropped — either changes the arithmetic entirely.
