Final grade formula (what do I need?)
This is the same weighted-average algebra behind most “what do I need on my final?” calculators (Calculator.net, GPACalculator.net, and classroom gradebooks). TryCalculatingNow runs it in your browser — not investment or academic advice.
The formula
- current — grade before the final (from your gradebook)
- desired — overall percent you want in the course
- w — final weight as a fraction (25% → 0.25, 40% → 0.40)
- needed — minimum score on the final to hit desired
Worked example (82 → 90, 30% final)
Current = 82, desired = 90, w = 0.30:
needed = (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 32.6 ÷ 0.30 ≈ 108.7%
You would need about 109% on the final — impossible without extra credit. Best overall with 100% on the final: 82 × 0.70 + 100 × 0.30 = 87.4%.
Easier case: current 88, desired 90, w = 0.20 → needed = (90 − 88 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 98%.
When you need over 100%
The algebra still works; the syllabus may not. Options: lower the target, confirm category weights, ask about curves or drops, or use reverse mode (“if I score X…”) to plan realistically.

Frequently asked questions
What is the final grade needed formula?
needed = (desired − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where current and desired are percents (or the same scale), and w is the final’s weight as a decimal (30% → 0.30).
What if the formula says I need over 100%?
Then that target is impossible with the stated current grade and final weight, even with a perfect final. Best overall ≈ current × (1 − w) + 100 × w. Ask about extra credit or category weights.
Can I solve this privately online?
Yes. TryCalculatingNow’s Final Grade Calculator runs the same formula in your browser — grades are not uploaded.
