How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage to get the amount off, then subtract it. Sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, 20% off $50 is $50 × 0.80 = $40, saving $10.
What is 20% off $50?
20% off $50 is $40 — you save $10. (50 × 0.20 = 10 off; 50 − 10 = 40.)
How do I work out the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If an item is $40 after 20% off, the original was 40 ÷ 0.80 = $50.
