Reading the result as feet and inches

A decimal answer like 5.58 ft is feet expressed as a fraction, not "5 feet 58". To get the familiar feet-and-inches form, keep the whole number as feet and multiply what is left by 12:

170 cm = 5.5774 ft
whole feet      = 5
0.5774 x 12     = 6.93 inches
so 170 cm is about 5 ft 7 in

Multiplying by 10 instead of 12 is the usual mistake, and it makes people about an inch shorter than they are.

You only need to remember one factor, because the reverse is its reciprocal:

Rounding, and how precise to be

Converting does not create accuracy that was not in the original measurement. If someone tells you a distance in whole centimetres, the converted figure is only as good as that starting estimate — quoting it to four decimal places implies a precision nobody measured.

A practical rule: keep roughly the same number of significant figures you started with, and round only at the end. Rounding at each intermediate step compounds the error, which is how a chain of conversions drifts away from the right answer.
