Pass Mark Calculator: Remaining Weight

If you need 40% overall and the final is 40% of the course, algebra tells you the minimum final score — or whether you already cannot pass.
A pass mark calculator solves for the score required on remaining assessment weight so your course average meets a pass threshold (for example 40% or 50%).
The weighted leftover formula
Let:
- C = current weighted average from work already graded (as a percent)
- W = weight already completed (decimal, e.g. 0.60)
- R = remaining weight (
1 − W) - P = pass mark percent
- X = needed score on the remaining block
C×W + X×R ≥ P
→ X ≥ (P − C×W) / R
If X > 100, you cannot reach P with the remaining weight alone. If X ≤ 0, you have already secured the pass on paper (barring must-pass finals).
Worked example
- Current average: 45% from 70% of the course
- Pass mark: 40%
- Remaining weight: 30%
X ≥ (40 − 45×0.70) / 0.30 = (40 − 31.5) / 0.30 = 28.3%
You only need about 28% on the remaining 30% — unless a rule says the final itself must be passed.
